How much does a deck cost in Springfield, MO?

A typical mid-size deck runs in the tens of thousands, and composite costs more than pressure-treated wood. Here's the best public data, and what makes your quote different.

Benchmark: 16×20 ft deck, U.S. national average, 2025Average job cost≈ per sq ft
Pressure-treated wood decking, PT frame, railing, stairs$18,263≈ $57
Composite decking, PT frame, railing, stairs$25,096≈ $78

Source: Remodeling magazine / Zonda, 2025 Cost vs. Value Report, national averages. The report doesn't publish a Springfield-specific figure, so treat this as a starting point; local labor costs differ. Per-sq-ft is our arithmetic (cost ÷ 320 sq ft). Not a quote.

What pushes the price up

  • Hillside lots: Ozarks slopes and walk-outs mean tall posts, bracing, multi-level designs and long stair runs.
  • Footings: Springfield lists a 24-inch frost depth, and rocky Ozarks ground can slow digging.
  • Covered decks and screened porches for summer shade and bugs add framing and roofing.
  • Decking and railings: PVC and premium composite cost more than PT; aluminum, cable and glass railings vary widely.
  • Shape and extras: angles, multiple levels, built-in benches, lighting and roofs add labor.
  • Demolition of an old deck, and permits and plans.

How to compare quotes

  • Make sure each quote has the same size, material, railing and stair count.
  • Ask who pulls the permit and whether fees are included.
  • Ask how the ledger is attached and flashed, and what connectors are used.
  • Missouri has no statewide general contractor license, so ask your city's building office (Springfield: Building Development Services) what applies, and always ask for insurance and a written contract.
  • Avoid paying most of the price up front.
