Decks and Ozarks weather

Springfield's own code amendments describe the climate plainly: Severe weathering and Moderate to Heavy termite risk (source).
Termites and rot
Keep wood off the soil, use lumber rated for ground contact where needed, and keep the area under the deck dry and open. Composite or PVC boards don't feed termites, but the frame underneath is usually still wood.
Freeze-thaw and footings
Springfield lists a 24-inch frost depth. Footings must reach it and bear on solid soil or rock; Ozarks ground is often rocky, which affects digging time and cost.
Hail, storms and sun
Spring storms and hail can damage railings, lights and roof covers, so check after big storms. Dark composite boards get hot in summer sun; lighter colors and shade help.
Hillside lots
Multi-level and elevated decks are common on Ozarks slopes. They need bracing, solid post-to-footing connections and well-built stairs, and higher decks are the ones Springfield requires permits for.
